Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT for short) is a milky white translucent to opaque, crystalline thermoplastic polyester resin.
Processing technology
PBT is a thermoplastic. In order to be suitable for use by different processors, additives are generally added or mixed with other plastics. With different proportions of additives, products of different specifications can be manufactured. Because PBT has heat resistance, weather resistance, chemical resistance, good electrical properties, low water absorption, and good gloss, it is widely used in electronic appliances, auto parts, machinery, household goods, etc. PBT products are also closely related to PPS, PC, POM, PA, etc. are collectively known as the five general-purpose engineering plastics. PBT has a fast crystallization speed, and the suitable processing method is injection molding. Other methods include extrusion, blow molding, coating and various secondary processing molding. It needs to be pre-dried before molding, and the moisture content should be reduced to 0.02%.
The polymerization process of PBT is mature, the cost is low, and the molding process is easy. The performance of unmodified PBT is not good. In practical application, PBT should be modified. Among them, glass fiber reinforced modified grades account for more than 70% of PBT.
Process characteristics of PBT
PBT has an obvious melting point, the melting point is 225~235C, it is a crystalline material, and the crystallinity can reach 40%. The viscosity of PBT melt is not affected as much by temperature as shear stress, therefore, in injection molding, the effect of injection pressure on the fluidity of PBT melt is obvious. In the molten state, PBT has good fluidity and low viscosity, second only to nylon, and is prone to “casting” during molding. PBT is easily degraded in contact with water at high temperature.
