Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most biodegradable biobases in thermoplastics and is obtained from renewable raw materials such as corn starch, tapioca, sugar cane and the fermentation of starch and dextrose and provides two active enantiomers D and L-lactic acids and 2-hydroxypropionic acid. Direct condensation of lactic acid monomers is used for the production of PLA. At the initial level of the process, lactic acid is oligomerized to PLA oligomers.

PLA polymers range from amorphous glassy polymers to semi-crystalline and crystalline polymers with a glass transition from 60-65 degrees Celsius melting temperature to 130-180 degrees Celsius. PLA is a semi-crystalline resin of choice and contains no nucleants of choice, and the mould temperature determines the last part of the amorphous crystalline morphology. Compared to conventional polymers such as polypropylene, polystyrene and polyurethane, PLA has good mechanical properties. Polylactic acid (PLA) resin.
