Nylon 6 is readily machined and available in common sizes of round and bar stock. The difficulty with nylon is that it easily absorbs moisture, making the manufacture of high tolerance parts a challenge due to growth. Oftentimes, other materials such as Acetal are preferred for higher tolerance parts. Other times, air cooling during machining is recommended over liquid coolants to lessen nylon’s expansion. While nylon itself can be machined with ordinary metal cutting tools, the glass-filled varieties usually require carbide or other abrasion-resistant cutters.

Nylon is also available in filament form for 3D printing. Its high melting temperature usually requires nozzles capable of handling higher heat than used in printing other plastics. It is readily injection molded, though high shrink rates must be taken into account and the material needs to be dried before processing. Nylon 6/6 has lower shrinkage than nylon 6 and is often preferred for molding. Typical applications for molded nylon include power-tool housings, door handles, grilles, terminal blocks, etc.
